Virtual Modem
Developer Description:
There are many old data-centric applications that, for historical reasons, use direct modem connections to exchange data between Client and Server. Nowadays, local and global TCP/IP networks have made the direct modem connection obsolete.
Here's why: When you use a direct modem connection, you need to have a physical modem installed on each PC that needs to exchange data. You also must use a physical phone line. This makes the line busy and may even be costly, if long distance calls are required. Modem transfers are also not secure. A hacker doesn't even need to have an access to your phone line. Your data can be easily intercepted with a remote phone line scanner. In a TCP/IP network, on the contrary, you can use the power of a VPN (Virtual Private Networking), SSH or any other secure tunnel to ensure privacy and security.
There are a lot of reasons to move from a direct modem connection to TCP/IP networking. But, how can you do this without investing thousands into new software? Virtual Modem from FabulaTech provides a cheap and effective solution. This program creates virtual modems that use your local network or the Internet instead of a physical phone line.
How does it work? The virtual modems are accessible to all the applications that work through a direct modem connection. Setup is no different from setting up a physical modem. You simply select a virtual COM port in your communication application settings. The application can control the virtual modem directly by sending AT commands or with TAPI (MS Windows Telephony API). Thus, Virtual Modem should work out-of-the-box for all your communication programs.
One of the very useful Virtual Modem features is its "Address Book". The Address Book allows you to transparently translate phone numbers into IP addresses. You don't even have to change the phone numbers in your communication programs. Just put them into your Address Book.

Software related to Virtual Modem
- Virtual Null Modem
The program emulates one or couples of RS-232 serial ports connected via virtual null-modem cable. It is possible to create the unlimited couples of virtual serial ports on a single PC and connect them in any sequence using virtual null-modem cable. - Virtual Modem PRO 3.0
Virtual Modem PRO works for every automation system that collects data from remote hosts using modem and telephone line. Virtual Modem PRO creates virtual com ports and attaches virtual modems to them, which work in the same way as real ones (support Hayes AT commands), however use TCP/IP protocol to connect to remote host. This gives better speed and reliability of transmitted data as well as up to 255 modems that can be created in any system. - Virtual Serial Port Driver XP4.5
Virtual Serial Port Driver XP (VSPD XP) is a powerful solution for serial port emulation. It creates virtual com ports in your system and connects them via reliable virtual link, which emulates real null-modem cable. - Virtual Serial Port Kit
Virtual Serial Port Kit creates pairs of virtual serial ports in your system which are virtually connected to each other. Physical null modem cables are not required. You can connect any number of virtual port pairs. It's very useful for debugging. - DEKSI Modem Pooling 1.3
DEKSI Modem Pooling (DMP) is an advanced, powerful, and feature rich client-server software system that allows you to use any serial (COM) port on a remote computer from your local computer via a TCP/IP network connection. Sharing COM ports means sharing resources like modems, ISDN adapters, X.25 PADs or any device that connects to a COM port. With DEKSI Modem Pooling you will save money on unnecessary hardware costs. - Modem Master ActiveX Component
Powerful COM Port wrapper Active-X. Can be used with Visual Basic, Delphi, MS Visual C++, Java Script, and any other applications capable to host AxtiveX components. - Eltima Virtual Serial Ports Driver XP
Eltima Virtual Serial Ports Driver XP creates any number of virtual serial ports in your system and connects them into pairs via virtual null modem cable. You can create as many virtual serial ports in your system as possible to fit your needs. - Turbo Connect
Turbo Internet Connection Optimize the Internet Experience Turbo Connect asks you to select your connection type (dialup modem, cable modem, DSL, etc) and then performs a live analysis of your connection. It uses this analysis to fine-tune all - Virtual Serial Ports Driver CE
Virtual Serial Ports Driver for Windows CE creates two pure virtual serial ports in your system which are virtually connected to each other. For other Windows applications they are seen exactly as two real serial ports with null-modem connection. - Advanced Virtual COM Port
This is the first software of its kind which includes both local and network virtual COM port
functions. It can share your real COM ports or create virtual COM ports and connect them with a
virtual null-modem cable locally or through the network. - Virtual Serial Port SDK
Create and manage virtual serial ports from .NET and Visual Basic (ActiveX) All windows platforms supported. Windows Mobile/Pocket PC, Windows XP/2k/NT and Windows ME/98. Samples in C#, VB.NET and VB6
